That’s the question thousands across the United States are grappling with this season during a particularly violent year of severe weather events. Horse owners, like Kyle Hughes of Meadowview, Va., whose home and halter training facility was demolished by a tornado recently, have the added consideration of livestock safety.

“While we did lose four horses—including the two that our nephew was going to take to the AQHA Youth World Show this year—we are grateful that everyone is safe and all of our injured horses are expected to make full recoveries,” said Hughes.

Hughes is also grateful to discover that hard times can bring together communities, which he has experienced first-hand. For example, when Bob Travis, general manager of leading equine apparel and leg protection manufacturer Pro Equine Products, of Pleasanton, Texas, heard about the Hughes family’s need for basic barn necessities after the storm, he decided to extend a hand of goodwill. His company donated and shipped the family a full order of their premium Nylon Stable Sheets.

“While Pro Equine Products serve horse-people everyday, we knew this was an opportunity to give back that we couldn’t pass up,” said Travis. “If our sheets can help the Hughes family’s transition back to work and home any easier, then we have done our job.”

The Hughes family is pleased to report that they are indeed starting to recover. A neighbor has lent them a temporary training facility, housing has been secured and they have found replacement horses for their nephew, Matthew Nash, 17, to exhibit at the Ford AQHYA World Championship Show.
